BFCM shipping and returns: set promises your store can keep
-
Before BFCM, make the product page, checkout, confirmation and support answer tell the same delivery and return story. A clear promise based on actual capacity is more useful than an aggressive arrival claim the fulfillment team cannot meet.
Start with the routes and products you plan to promote. Do not assume one shipping statement fits every location, bulky item or preorder.
Separate processing from carrier transit
Processing covers the work before a parcel is handed to the carrier; transit covers its journey afterward. Shopify notes that carrier-calculated transit estimates can exclude processing time. Review the complete promise rather than presenting the carrier's time as the entire order-to-door timeline.
For each important destination, record processing assumptions, collection days, service used and the evidence behind the estimate. Review holiday closures and the carrier's current guidance before publishing a deadline. This article does not supply carrier-specific cutoff dates.
If you cannot support a guaranteed arrival, describe the estimate accurately. An order cutoff should specify the timezone and the conditions that affect it.
Match the promise to packing capacity
Estimate how many orders the team can pack per working day, then compare that capacity with the promotion scenarios. Prepare a rule for updating processing estimates when the backlog crosses a level you can no longer absorb.
Assign someone to change the storefront message and notify support when that rule is triggered. The update should reach new shoppers before they purchase, not only customers who ask afterward.
Make the return decision understandable
State how customers request a return, the applicable window, item conditions, responsibility for return shipping and any clearly disclosed exclusions. Check that your written policy matches the return rules and tools actually used in the store, including any market-specific requirements.
Do not assume marking an item “final sale” overrides obligations in the markets you serve. Have the responsible person review those requirements when setting the policy; a software configuration alone does not establish compliance.
Give support useful templates
Prepare short, editable responses for a discount dispute, a delayed dispatch, a tracking exception and a return request. A good template identifies the order's current state, the next action, the owner and when the customer can expect another update.
For example: “Your order is awaiting dispatch. We are checking the revised handover date with our fulfillment team and will update you by [realistic time].” Replace the placeholders with verified details. Do not promise a refund, replacement or arrival date that has not been authorized.
Rehearse an exception
Choose one promoted product and imagine that its replenishment arrives late. Walk through pausing advertising, changing the delivery message, updating support and contacting affected customers through your normal process.
Then check a partial return from a discounted bundle. If staff cannot explain how the refund will be calculated, resolve the rule before launch rather than improvising during the sale.
Merchant discussion: Which promise needs the most work in your store: dispatch timing, arrival estimates, return eligibility or refund calculation?
