Treat an abandoned checkout as an unresolved buying journey before treating it as a request for a discount. The shopper may have encountered unexpected shipping, an unsuitable delivery date, a payment problem or uncertainty about the product. A recovery message is useful when it helps resolve that issue and still reflects the store's real offer.

Do not promise that a recovery sequence will produce a particular conversion rate. Start with your own checkout history and a small, observable plan.

    Separate browsing, carts and checkouts

A product view, an added cart item and a started checkout are different events. Your ability to contact the shopper and the automation that applies can differ too.

Shopify's current abandoned-checkout automation is managed in Shopify Messaging. The documented channel coverage and recipient settings have limits; the default audience is marketing subscribers. Check the current workflow and your store's applicable permissions rather than assuming every abandoned basket can be emailed.

    Diagnose the repeated obstacle

Review a bounded sample of abandoned checkouts and support questions. Look for a pattern you can act on:

    • Delivery is slower or more expensive than the landing page suggests.
    • A code fails because a product or basket is ineligible.
    • A popular variant becomes unavailable.
    • Payment fails or a payment method is missing.
    • Important product or return information appears too late.

Fix a recurring storefront problem first. Sending more reminders to the same broken journey does not address its cause.

Design a sequence with different jobs

As a planning template, give the first eligible message a simple purpose: restore the checkout link and explain where to get help. A later message can answer a genuine common question or restate an existing offer.

Only add a new incentive when its cost, eligibility, expiry and combination rules are intentional. Automatically offering a deeper discount to every person who waits can reward delay and erode the margin on orders that might have completed anyway.

Choose timing based on your audience, sale deadline and sending rules. A generic “best delay” is not a reliable substitute for checking when your own customers buy.

Test the things that make recovery misleading

Reopen a test checkout after a purchase, a stockout and the promotion's end. Review whether the workflow suppresses or changes the message appropriately. Check that the final basket price and available shipping options match what the message promises.

Do not say the customer's stock is reserved unless the store genuinely reserves it. Do not imply a promotion is still active after its deadline. If a new checkout or completed purchase changes eligibility, confirm that the automation handles that state.

Measure the recovered order, not only the click

Record eligible checkouts, messages sent, clicks, completed orders, incentives used and contribution after discounts. A completed checkout after a message is not automatically proof that the message caused the purchase. Use a comparable holdout where your tooling and audience size support a useful test.

Merchant discussion: What do shoppers in your store most often need before they can finish: delivery clarity, product information or help with payment?
