BFCM email marketing: a segmented campaign calendar for Shopify
-
Build a BFCM email calendar around why a subscriber should receive a message, not how many messages the team can schedule. Start with a permissioned audience, separate the main customer needs and remove purchased or otherwise unsuitable contacts from promotional sends.
Shopify's subscriber guidance says promotional emails should go to people who agreed to receive marketing. Its customer segments let you group customers by criteria and use those groups for relevant campaigns. Check your actual sending platform, permissions and audience eligibility before scheduling anything.
Give each audience a clear job
Create a few useful groups that your data can actually support:
- Subscribers who have not purchased: explain product fit and the offer clearly.
- Previous buyers: feature a relevant complement or replenishment opportunity.
- Loyal customers: explain any genuine early-access benefit.
- Customers with a recent purchase or unresolved problem: review whether another sales message is appropriate.
These groups can overlap. Decide which message wins and apply exclusions so one person does not receive every version of the campaign.
Use this calendar as a starting template
The dates below are suggested campaign decisions, not a proven send-frequency formula.
Period Message job Send only when November 9–15 Explain useful products or gift choices The content helps the selected audience November 16–22 Explain the planned offer and key terms Stock, dates and exclusions are approved November 23–26 Share genuine early access, if offered Eligibility and access actually work November 27 Announce the live offer Landing page and checkout have passed tests November 28–29 Answer a specific objection or show a relevant selection It adds information beyond the launch email November 30 Explain the real closing time The stated deadline will be honored Use the recipient's relevant timezone and your store's sale timezone consistently. Reduce frequency if the team cannot keep content relevant or if complaint and unsubscribe signals worsen.
Write the offer as a complete sentence
An illustrative draft: “Our selected winter collection is 20% off until 11:59 p.m. in the store's stated timezone on November 30; excluded products and shipping terms are listed on the sale page.”
Replace every detail with your actual offer. The subject, preview text, body and destination page should agree. Avoid “your order” or “account alert” framing for an ordinary promotion.
Test eligibility, not only the template
Check the sender identity, reply inbox, unsubscribe route, mobile layout, destination URL, discount conditions and suppression after a relevant purchase. Review consented subscriber growth, clicks, orders, complaints and unsubscribes together; opens alone do not establish buying intent or profitability.
Keep a small decision log so an unexpected audience result can be traced to the segment definition and exclusions used at send time.
Merchant discussion: What useful difference can you make between your first-time subscriber message and your returning-customer message?
